Events - Walk For Missions - Silver Anniversary - 25 Years
Sunday, October 14, 2018

The Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood, together with our beloved communities, have been gathering on the second Sunday of October for well over twenty five years and participating in the "Walk for Missions." This annual event is our opportunity to put the spotlight on world missions and to support the efforts of those who are in the mission field. Some of the past projects that the Walk funds were earmarked for were an ambulance for a medical clinic and bicycles for priests in Africa, textbooks for seminarians in Guatemala, and other general needs in the mission fields.

For the past several years, Fr. John and Presvytera Sandy Chakos have been doing extensive mission work in Guatemala. They have a blog called "The Word from Guatemala." You can follow their efforts and see the great progress being made in bringing many of the Mayan people into the Orthodox Church. This year we are happy to report that a medical clinic has been completed to assist the local people with basic medical treatments. There is a short video that shows the progress of the medical center - https://youtu.be/4Qg26Yy2lqI. This clinic is dedicated to the memory of Fr. Andres Giron, the spiritual father who guided many of these remote Mayan villages into Orthodoxy.

Two new videos that show the recent work in Guatemala:

  • The link for the Medical Clinic Video in Aguacate, Guatemala, is https://youtu.be/ShJ6jgDvJbc. It depicts life in the village, the impact that the clinic has had on health outcomes, and how the Orthodox Church has brought hope to the Mayan people.
  • The recent consecration of St. John the Baptist Church in Los Angeles, Guatemala. https://youtu.be/h-zboReHPIU

We rejoice that we can support the efforts of the Chakos Family and help the native people of Central America find the true Faith. The proceeds from this year's Walk for Missions will go towards the ongoing missionary efforts in Guatemala and particularly the seminarians who are being trained to be ordained. Fr. John and Presvytera Sandy Chakos are available to speak at your parish (contact phone # 412-249-8862).

Please join us on Sunday, October 14th at South Park for the annual "Walk for Missions." Even if you are unable to be with us in person, your donation will be extremely helpful in carrying out this important and necessary work of the Church.
