Life faces us with many challenges, not the least of which is illness. All of us will struggle with illness at some point, some of which can be quite serious. In times such as this, we should turn to the Church for prayer and aid. The sacrament of Holy Unction is specifically for the healing of both soul and body. It is an ancient practice attested to in the Epistle of Saint James: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” As we are all in need of healing, both physically and spiritually, Holy Unction is a very important sacrament in the life of the Church.
During the service of Holy Unction, the priests present read seven different Gospel passages, which attest to the healing miracles Christ performed throughout his ministry. Holy Unction is a living testament to the continued presence of Christ’s healing powers within the body of the Church. The service culminates with the blessing of the Holy Unction, which is a kind of oil that is then placed upon the faithful Orthodox Christians in attendance. This service usually takes place on Wednesday of Holy Week. Please consult our schedule for this years service.
