Sacraments

Baptism and Christmation

In Orthodox Christianity, baptism marks the spiritual rebirth and the beginning of our journey with Christ. Through this sacred sacrament, we are cleansed of sin and united with Christ. To learn more or schedule a baptism, contact Father Michael or our church offices.

Holy Unction

In times of illness, the Orthodox Church offers the sacrament of Holy Unction for the healing of both soul and body. Rooted in ancient tradition, this sacred service, usually held on Holy Wednesday, reminds us of Christ’s enduring healing power. Check our schedule for this year’s service.

Holy Confession

The sacrament of confession allows us to seek God’s forgiveness and reclaim the purity granted at baptism. This ancient practice, essential to Orthodox life, renews our connection to Christ. To schedule a confession, contact Father Michael or one of our priests.

Holy Eucharist / Communion

Marriage

In Orthodox Christianity, marriage is a sacred union where two individuals become one in Christ, journeying together towards spiritual growth. This sacrament is symbolized by crowns and a shared path toward the altar. For those planning to marry at Holy Cross Church, we offer an annual marriage seminar during Lent and pre-marriage counseling. Contact Father Michael for details.

Funerals

The sacraments of the Orthodox Church guide us through every phase of life, from baptism to marriage, and ultimately to the funeral service. In Orthodoxy, funerals are a time of “joyful sorrow,” where we grieve the loss of a loved one but find hope in Christ’s Resurrection. The funeral service honors the departed, praying for their rest and affirming our belief in the bodily resurrection. Orthodox Christians show reverence to the body, eschewing cremation, and instead preparing it for burial with prayers and anointing.
